Transferring is less painful than it sounds: the gaining registrar charges a year, and that year is added to your current expiry rather than replacing it. You are buying a year you were going to buy anyway, at a lower price. The friction is the unlock-and-auth-code dance, not the money.

Why is my IONOS renewal higher than what I paid to register?
Almost every registrar prices the first year as an offer and renews at standard rate. It is not specific to this registrar, and it is not a mistake — the introductory price is a customer-acquisition cost the renewal recovers. The number to compare between registrars is always the renewal.
Should I move my domains away from IONOS?
It depends on the gap and how long you will hold the domain. A transfer buys a year, so it is close to free in real terms when the annual saving is meaningful — but for a single domain with a small gap it is not worth the afternoon. Check your own numbers per TLD in the table above.
Does transferring away from IONOS cost anything?
The gaining registrar charges one year's renewal to accept the transfer, and that year is added to your existing expiry date rather than replacing it — so you are buying a year you would have bought anyway, at the new registrar's price. ICANN also blocks transfers for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer.
