When a gTLD reaches its expiry date, it does not vanish. The registry auto-renews it and flags it with the autoRenewPeriod status, which starts a window in which the registrar can hand the renewal back to the registry for credit if the customer does not pay. From the outside, that window is what everyone calls the grace period: the domain is technically renewed, the registrar is carrying the cost, and you can still put it right at the normal renewal price.

What you actually experience during it varies. Most registrars stop the domain resolving at some point after expiry — ICANN's expired-registration rules require the original DNS to be interrupted — so the site goes dark and mail stops even though the domain is still recoverable. Many registrars park it on an advertising page in the meantime, which is a memorable way to find out your renewal card expired. The expiry checker reads the status codes directly from the registry, so it will tell you whether a domain is genuinely in grace or has already moved on.

The critical thing to understand is that the grace period is discretionary, not guaranteed. Registrars commonly offer somewhere between 30 and 45 days for gTLDs, some offer far less, and some offer none at all on certain TLDs. ccTLD registries run entirely their own schedules. Treating a published figure as a deadline you can rely on is how people lose domains — the only number that is genuinely yours is the expiry date itself.

Miss the grace period and the domain drops into the redemption period, where recovery is still possible but costs a restore fee that is a multiple of the renewal you were avoiding.
