When a domain finishes pending delete, the registry purges the record and the name becomes registrable again. Registries do this in predictable daily batches, so the moment of release is known in advance to within a narrow window. Drop catching is the business of being the first registration request through the door at that moment.

The mechanism is unglamorous. Each accredited registrar gets a limited number of concurrent connections to a registry's system, which caps how many attempts per second it can make. So the serious catchers accumulate registrar accreditations — dozens of them each — for no reason other than to multiply their attempts. The outcome is decided in milliseconds by infrastructure. A person refreshing a checkout page has, for practical purposes, no chance at all on a name anyone else wants.

Winning the catch is not always the end of it. If several customers of the same catching service had requested the same name, the service typically resolves it with a private auction among them, so a successful backorder on a desirable domain frequently means winning an auction rather than paying a registration fee. Budget accordingly.

The larger caveat is that most valuable expiring domains never drop at all. Registrars route them into their own expired-domain auctions during grace and redemption, which means the pool reaching the actual drop is what nobody bid on. A watchlist's honest value is visibility and lead time — knowing a domain has entered redemption in time to decide whether to bid or arrange a backorder — rather than any promise you will hand-grab it.
